Please note this only applies to users of version 2.0 of the plugin, which will be any plugin sold on or after the 29th March 2010. If you purchased your plugin before this date, then please refer to the following instructions for installation
For version 2.0 we made the plugin much easier to install and uninstall. If you have installed a plugin in Joomla before, then the installation will be a snap!
- Save unzipfirst_v2.0.zip to a folder on your pc and unzip it. Two further zip files will result: plg_auth_EmailAsUsername_v2.0.zip and plg_Sys_EmailAsUsername_v2.0.zip
- Install each plugin (the files begginning with "plg") using the installer in the Joomla! Back end. (Extentions->Install / Uninstall)
- Make sure you publish both the authentication plugin, and the system plugin after installation.
If you wish to disable the function of the plugin at anytime, then simply disable, or uninstall the system plugin.
Note for users that are upgrading from version 1.x (purchased before 29th March 2010)
Version 1.x of the plugin worked by populating the username field with the users email address (thus allowing users to login using thier email address) However the version 2.0 work with Joomla retaining the username / email architecture, but hiding the username from the front end user. As such, if you have previously used version 1.x and want to upgrade to version 2.0 you will need to run a short conversion process on the user table.
Because the plugin will make bulk changes to the Joomla users table it is highly recommended that you take a backup of your whole Joomla database before continuing. We will not be held responsible in anyway for loss of data, or site downtime
- Once the plugin is installed, then visit the plugin parameters page (Extentions->Plugins->System - Email as Username) and select "Convert from ver 1.x" from the plugin functions drop down.
- Click on save or apply. The plugin function drop down will correctly return to "Select function..."
The conversion process examines each user in the user table and generates a unique username based on the contents of the name field. Numbers are added to usernames to avoid duplicates. So for example, if you have a user named "Dave" and the username "Dave" has not been taken, then "Dave" will be used as the username, if the conversion routine encounters another "Dave" then "Dave1" will be used. |
